4th Light Horse Regiment

Memorial Association

This part of the Pictures & Stories of the members of the 4th Light Horse is different to the other pages.

The Hon Dr Sharman Stone AM, a 4th Light Horse Regiment Memorial Association member, presented her research paper “The Australian Light Horse on the Western Front 1915-1919” as part of the commemoration of the 110th anniversary of the establishment of the 4th Light Horse Regiment.

Sharman’s complete paper, (which you access via the link provided below), explores the exploits of the 4th Light Horse in France and Belgium.

Initially they fought in the trenches of the 1915-17 stalemate, then used mounted tactics in the offensives of late 1917-1918.

Their involvement in these conflicts contributed to the Regiment earning the most Battle Honours of any Australian unit in WW1.

Regrettably this commitment has been either largely forgotten or down-played.

Sharman was initially inspired to undertake her investigations by the service of her grandfather, Sgt Alfred Bawden MM, who served in D Troop, B Division of the 4th Light Horse.  (You can also access his story via the link provided below.)

Sharman is continuing to delve deeper into these matters and is keen to hear from anyone with further information, pictures and documents relating to the activities of the 4th Light Horse on the Western Front.
